Delaine Byrd -- "I Can Do My Gardening Without Pain"
Delaine's Lifestyle
In her youth, Delaine Byrd was a gymnast, a dancer and a swimmer. As an adult, she maintained an active lifestyle. . .until she was stricken with back pain.
Chronic Pain
Delaine then experienced first-hand the meaning of chronic pain. Her right leg was dragging and she felt pain down her back into her buttocks. She could not sit for more than 30 minutes.
The First Doctor
A specialist diagnosed her with spondylolisthesis and referred her to another physical therapy clinic for treatment. However, a family member had heard about the impressive outcomes of The Spine Institute and strongly advised her to receive therapy there instead. Her physician agreed to the change and Delaine made significant progress in back strength and pain relief, which improved her quality of life considerably.
Unfortunately, she was at high risk to re-injure her back due to the nature of her condition and was hurting again before long. She sought a second opinion by another specialist who said a complicated fusion surgery might help but that it was very complex so he sent her to an integrative pain management program as an alternative. The integrative pain management program indicated the pain was a result of "negative thoughts" even though the doctor who referred her there had diagnosed a serious problem.
The New Doctor
That's when she changed doctors again. The new doctor discounted the need for the complex fusion surgery and recommended a much less serious surgery.
A Solution, Finally
"The physical therapy at The Spine Institute prior to my surgery was a great benefit even if it did not eliminate all my pain," she said. "It helped me regain strength, and with that strength I was able to have a simpler surgery than had been recommended to help eliminate the pain."
The Result
Delaine's doctor performed a laminectomy and she is now doing well. "I am feeling the benefits of both the surgery and the therapy that helped me strengthen my back and bounce back."
Delaine Today
Today, Delaine has recovered from the surgery and can now do things she enjoys. "I love my flowers and recently did yard work with no pain." She is also now able to sit for extended periods and is cross-stitching stockings for her 14 grandchildren.
