Andy Holley - Assistant Fire Chief, Back Spasms

ANDY HOLLEY Andy's Lifestyle
Andy was always active in his youth and enjoyed sports and weight-lifting. His adult life has been active too, with many physical demands. He joined the Bossier City Fire Department and worked as a firefighter before moving into Communications and becoming assistant chief. He also has a part-time job working on Life Air Rescue, a job that is physically demanding. And he has continued his interest in weight-lifting.

Pain and Discomfort

The years of physical stress began to take their toll on Andy's lower back. He experienced chronic lower back pain - something he refers to as "discomfort" since he has so often encountered trauma patients with pain he considered far more serious. But at times his discomfort was more severe when he experienced a back spasm.

Confined to Bed
The spasms came periodically without warning, sometimes sending him to the floor. Usually they were so severe that he could not get out of bed for two or more days. His back simply could not support his weight. The doctor indicated a bulging disc was causing his lower back to spasm.

The Therapy
Andy's doctor recommended physical therapy. His therapist initiated a program of back strengthening and showed Andy what to do if he felt back pain coming on. He helped Andy realize that he was going to need to make changes in his life and lifestyle in addition to strengthening the muscles in his back.

Andy's Result
"I can tell the difference. Since the therapy I have not had a lower back spasm, and I am educated about what I should and should not do. I realize now that there is more risk in lifting heavy weight as I get older. I still enjoy playing softball and working out."
